Grounds of Nature

PERMACULTURE & COMMUNITY COLLECTIVE

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature--the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter."

- Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

Wombat Gardening

Wombat Gardening’s aim is to help create green spaces within the community. At its core it’s about caring for country by introducing native plant species back into suburbia but also promoting and building edible spaces within homes and within community spaces, in collaboration with other individuals and groups. Wombat gardening plays a small part in a growing movement that is calling humanity back in to alignment with Nature. Wombat gardening is implementing special services to those within the community that may not be in a position to pay the cost for particular work to be carried out or have some other barrier which prevents them from performing a task.

Services:

  • Providing environmentally low impact gardening services which includes commuting from job to job on the WOMBAT Electric Cargo Bike.

  • Garden design and maintenance with a focus on native plants and edible spaces

  • Promoting biodiversity into gardens by introducing a range of suitable plants, objects and systems

  • Raised vegetable beds

  • Garden structures i.e. trellis and arbours

  • Pruning and weeding

  • Composting

  • Collaborating with local community groups to achieve common goals

  • Please note Wombat Gardening does not generally care for lawns. We are guided by the principles of permaculture and work hard to mimic the natural environment that Nature provides.

  • we do not promote or apply artificial fertilisers, or use harmful herbicides or pesticides.

The foundation of Grounds of Nature is built upon the principles of permaculture: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share. These principles

  • conservation of biodiversity

  • clean air and water

  • restoration and conservation of forests and habitats

  • working toward zero waste and pollution

  • conservation of energy and protection of natural resources

  • choosing appropriate technology, solar economy

People care

People care includes self-care, caring for others, community care, caring and also embraces caring for other species.

It includes themes such as:

  • health and well-being

  • nourishment with good food

  • education

  • right livelihood, purpose and meaningful work

  • community belonging

  • open Communication

  • trust and respect

Fair share

The third ethic focuses on natural limits to growth and the equitable distribution of resources to meet our needs (rather than wants) and to

ensure other species also have access.

The themes here include:

  • co-operation and collaboration

  • networking and sharing

  • distribution of resources and wealth

  • reduction of consumerism

  • rethinking current notions of growth, progress and development

  • making a contribution
